It was announced and initiated by Saint John Paul II in 1985 as a way to inspire the youth and encourage them in living the teachings of Christ. It is a time of gathering, praying and learning how to follow Christ paths and bringing His light to the whole world.
In Rio de Janeiro Pope Francis announced:
"Dear Young Friends, we have made an appointment to meet at the next World Youth Day in 2016 in Krakow, Poland. Through the intercession of our Lady we pray to the Holy Spirit to light our way which will lead us towards this new stage of joyful celebration of faith and love of Jesus".
